The Pre-Play Score Scan (STARS)

Before playing a note, spend 30 seconds scanning: S = Signatures (clef/key/time), T = Tempo/mood, A = Accidentals, R = Rhythm patterns, S = Signs/repeats.

Tap the rhythm on your knee and name the opening chords before your hands touch the instrument.

Keep Moving Forward

The golden rule of sight-reading: never stop, stumble, or backtrack to fix a wrong note. Keep the pulse steady even if notes are dropped.

In ensemble and collaborative playing, rhythmic continuity is paramount.

Choosing Level-Appropriate Material

Sight-read music that is two levels below your current solo repertoire so reading fluency can flourish without technical blocks.
